We raised over $35,000 for Starfish Family Services! $35,000!!!! WE. You, me, us. I am so proud to be part of our Detroit Metro community, collectively making a huge impact on children’s lives. On February 14, 2020, we celebrated the creation of the new preschool classroom at Starfish with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
It all happened rather quickly: we reached our goal of $20,000 by December even before our fundraiser gala, at the gala we presented Starfish with a check, and then we continued raising money. Surpassing our $20,000 goal means not only can we build a classroom but also provide more than the bare minimum to Starfish. Wipes, diapers, food, socks, toothbrushes, and so many other things families struggle to buy for their children. This makes my heart so happy to know these children are receiving the best care in a safe environment, given the chance to excel like all children should.
When you are a mother, you start tuning in to travesties happening to kids. Thank goodness for places like Starfish Family Services that work in partnership with families and counsel parents, helping them become better parents.
Starfish can’t solve everything of course; issues still arise. But they’re doing everything they can to help families in need, and I and my fellow Moms For Starfish are all for that!
At the ribbon-cutting ceremony, all four of us (the MomsForStarfish group) joined the Starfish CEO Ann Kalass, administrators, teachers, parents, and children for a tour of the space. The classroom will allow at least 8 children at a time to be nurtured, grow, nap, and so much more. There is a designated area to brush teeth, a climbing structure, a music station, and a reading station; the room is intentionally laid out and designed. We wanted to give them an over abundance of money so they could fund these amenities.
Fox2 News featured the unveiling and a permanent plaque at the door honors Moms For Starfish.
This classroom represents a labor of love for all of us in the community. Thank you for stepping up and making a difference. When you can see the fruits of your labor, it becomes so much more than just a check. You can see what your donations have created. Be the change!
