For the perfect summer family getaway, we visited The Homestead in Glen Arbor, Michigan. Doubted as country-chic, the resort offers pools, a golf course, close proximity to Lake Michigan and the Sleeping Bear Dunes, and lots of space to play wild and free.
Choose between staying at the inn or renting a house or condo on the property. My family opted for a 2-bedroom condo with a bit more space and a full kitchen–which is almost a necessity with three kids under 6. The condo was charming with 1990s decor. There was even a proper telephone that the kids loved trying out!
Because we couldn’t jump on a plane due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we drove a few hours and it felt like we entered a new adventure land. I have fallen in love with Northern Michigan more and more each time I visit. The small-town charm lures you in, inviting you to breath in the fresh air and appreciate all the natural wonders. Pandemic or not, The Homestead is an idealistic escape.
Our 4-night stay was just what we needed.
We played at the pool.
The kids ate way too much complimentary ice cream poolside.
We went on hikes.
Easy access between our room and the pool (which is wonderful with young kids and you have to constantly change clothes.)
Convenient location when discovering all lakefront towns around Glen Arbor.
We discovered all the trinkets over which kids get wide-eyed.
My 2020 vision board had big, big plans. Those plans included traveling, particularly internationally, with my family. I was excited to introduce my kids to new adventures and new cultures, so we could forge even more lasting, irreplaceable memories. But because of COVID-19, our travel plans, like most of yours, have been put on hold. After months in quarantine with a full house, including my newborn Rocco, the Morris clan needed a vacation. I embraced the chance to slow down and focus on life more locally, and staying at the Homestead in Glen Arbor did not disappoint!
And, I should mention, The Homestead took all necessary safety precautions to abide by CDC guidelines. Everyone wore masks around the property and during-stay housekeeping services are postponed for now.
I invite you to approach travel with an optimistic, open mindset: instead of being nostalgic for luxurious international vacations, appreciate local adventures close by, in your bubble. Trade in airplane tickets for gas miles, and entertainment tickets for outdoor fun. Because, after all, our kids don’t need extravagance to experience the unforgettable.
