We all survive the Michigan winter just so we can reap the benefits of Michigan summers!
Summer means laketime fun, swimming and bbqing with family and friends. It’s why we live in Michigan. As moms, all we want is for our kids to have fun and be childlike while feeling safe. And so swim safety is an absolute necessity. It’s a life skill in which we must invest time and energy teaching at a young age. And something that could save their lives! They’re never too young to start. And so my kids are learning to swim at Goldfish Swim School in Birmingham, because I want them to feel as comfortable and confident as possible anytime they’re in and around water.
Goldfish Swim School is conveniently located close to my house and has classes both during the day, in the evening, and even on Saturdays. Since Roman and Isabella got sick last week, we’ve only been a couple times but our experience has already been amazing so far!
Parents congregate and watch behind a window area, which enables the instructors to have full control of the lessons. Roman was in one lane with a few other kids his age. He’s such a cutie with his goggles and toothless smile, waving and smiling at Isabella in the next lane over. Isabella, on the other hand, having never really done anything without me, wasn’t so upbeat. She was having a meltdown, kicking and screaming, scared of being in the water without me. And yet despite her screaming and crying, the instructors were so amazing! So patient, loving, and enthusiastic. They got her to even giggle a few times, her head resting on their shoulders. All the other parents reassured me that’s what happened with their kids and slowly but surely they got more comfortable in the water. The school definitely fosters a sense of community and support…which I’m all about!
We haven’t finished a full program yet but I’m already on board. Since opening in 2004, Goldfish Swim School promotes independence while teaching children to be strong swimmers and feel comfortable in the water. The ratio is never more than 4:1, which ensures the instructors are fully engaged with each child in the group. I opted for the group lessons because I thought it’d be more social and fun for my kids. But you can also do individual lessons. They’ve got all the swim essentials–diapers and goggles–as well as post-swim snacks. Which, if your kids are like mine, gets them excited to go anywhere.
I’m excited to watch Roman and Isabella progress in the water. Reach out if you want your kids to join us at Goldfish!
